2017 was one of the worst years in the cyber world,as it witnessed series of deadly attacks especially ransomware attacks such as wanna-cry and petya that effected many government and corporate websites across the globe.Now 2018 also began with
malwarewhich was detected before making any damage.
Internet security watchdog detected a new malware named as "Adultswine" in around 60 gaming apps on google play store,which was used to pop-up adult porn images even on the apps certified appropriate for children and this malware also has the capability to steal banking credentials.The fact is that the apps are installed on smartphones numbering between 3 million to 7 million.
How this malware works on android phones:
1.It begins when a user downloads a gaming app from Google play store.Once installed the app sends successful installation status to remote command center.
2.The app begins to pop up pornographic images during the game and induces the user to install dubious antivirus on their phone.
3.Later the antivirus app begins to persuade users to enroll for some jackpot with prizes including free iphones and other gifts.
4.Excited users participate in the contest and if the user wins it will ask them to furnish phone numbers for communication purposes and for tracking of gift delivery.
5.With contact details,they subscribe to premium services without users consent and before their know money will be deducted.
How to protect your smartphone from "Adultswine" and other malware:
We can partly blame google for not checking its applications before uploading them to play store blame for Adultswine.To be on safer side always follow these guidelines:
Always keep your smartphone updated to the latest firmware.
Make sure to use premium antivirus software which also provides malware protection and internet security.
Never open emails sent from unknown senders.
Never install apps from unknown websites.
Never install apps from unfamiliar publishers even on play store.
